History
The soft drink Pepsi was created in the 1880s by a man named Caleb Bradham who was a pharmacist from North Carolina. The soft drink rapidly began to grow in popularity. The Pepsi-Cola Company was founded in 1902 and the Pepsi soft drink was patented in 1903. In 1931, the Pepsi-Cola Company went bankrupt. Charles Guth, the owner of a syrup manufacturing business in Maryland, bought the trademark and syrup recipe. Charles Guth was the president of Loft, Incorporated which was a large candy manufacturer. Guth reformulated the syrup and sold the soda in his candy sops and restaurants.
In 1941, Loft, Incorporated absorbed Pepsi. The business was re-named to be called Pepsi-Cola Company later that year. The products sold by Pepsi-Cola Company expanded in the 1960s when Diet Pepsi was created and Mountain Dew was purchased. The Pepsi-Cola Company merged with Frito-Lay in 1965. The merger led to the company name changing to PepsiCo.
